Areas affected...Northern NC...Southern VA

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 167...

Valid 012243Z - 020015Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 167
continues.

SUMMARY...Severe threat continues, primarily across eastern portions
of ww.

DISCUSSION...Apparent weak mid-level short-wave trough is ejecting
east across the southern Appalachians early this evening. A
semi-organized cluster of convection has evolved ahead of this
feature from south-central VA to southeast of RCZ. This activity has
a history of producing large hail but buoyancy drops off
considerably east of a line from PTB-LHZ-SOP where surface dew
points are in the 50s. Updraft intensity will likely wane as drier
air begins to be ingested into these storms, not to mention
boundary-layer cooling over the next few hours. Upstream across
western NC, a few showers have recently developed in the wake of
this more organized activity. However, it's not real clear if these
new updrafts will be sustained, or even organize enough to produce
hail/wind.
