Billy Joel is giving the people (read: this writer’s mother) what they want (read: any content related to Billy Joel). HBO announced this afternoon that a new two-part documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes will debut on the channel this summer. The project, which co*es from the team behind the documentary Jane Fonda In Five Acts, promises “an expansive portrait of the life and music of Billy Joel,” based upon archival concert footage, home movies, and in-depth interviews.

“For those who think they know Joel’s story, as well as those who are not as familiar, I believe this two-part film is both a revelation and a surprise,” says director and producer Susan Lacy in a press statement. “I was drawn to his story as someone who knew little at the outset, and was astounded at how autobiographical his songs are and how co*plex his story is. We are gratified that Bill trusted us with his story, which we have told as honestly as possible, diving into territory which has not been explored before.”

Last year, Joel finished out his historic residency at Madison Square Garden, performing 104 shows over the decade-long headlining gig (bringing his career total to 150 performances at the venue). He also released his first new song in 17 years, and performed the track at the 2024 Grammys. Most recently, Joel postponed a number of touring dates originally scheduled for summer 2025 after undergoing surgery. Hopefully the HBO docuseries can tide over any devoted fans (such as this writer’s mother) until he gets back on the road.
