Ben Affleck "kind of shocked and appalled" he got away with that Armageddon co*mentary

[html]Nevertheless Affleck considers the co*mentary a great career achievement.

GQ‘s new profile of Ben Affleck offers fascinating insight into the actor, like what he considers “one of the achievements of my career on which I’m willing to pat myself on the back.” He refers not to the two Oscars or the MTV Movie Award encased in his office, but to the co*mentary track he did for Armageddon. “I believe that may be at least top five all-time DVD co*mentaries,” he says proudly.

Clips of Affleck’s co*mentary on the Michael Bay film go viral periodically for the vicious delight in the actor’s voice as he rips into the logical inconsistencies of the plot. Affleck now says “nobody said anything to me” about how irreverent he was in the co*mentary, probably because “I don’t think any of the other people listened to it or gave a fuck until years later when it was played.” Affleck himself was “kind of shocked and appalled” at himself for doing it, even though everything he said was honest: “[But] that’s the point. You’re not supposed to go on there and tell all of the truth.”

Affleck was just 26 years old when Armageddon came out, and he’s obviously co*e a long way since then; he probably wouldn’t run his mouth on a DVD co*mentary or pester his director with logic questions at this stage of his career. But back in 1998, he had “a sense of being small and of this thing being big,” he says. “And so I felt like a little ant on the elephant when I would shoot my mouth off about the conversation I had with Michael about why is it easier to train oil drillers to be astronauts than to train astronauts to drill a hole in the ground?”

Nevertheless the older, wiser Ben Affleck can appreciate the entertainment value generated by his younger, brasher self. And, generally, he can appreciate the general entertainment value of his most viral moments, even if the attention to his personal life has been particularly invasive. He’s tried to thwart the paparazzi by looking “like a slob,” but “then you beco*e the sad Affleck meme spil*ing the coffee. Which I have to say I think is kind of funny.”
