George Clooney declares self too old for the rom-co*

Is a person ever too old to find themselves in a new love story? It sounds like a good premise for a romantic co*edy (or for several romantic co*edies). But not for George Clooney, who recently made his Broadway debut in Good Night And Good Luck. “Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to co*pete with 25-year-old leading men,” Clooney said in an interview with 60 Minutes (via People). “That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore.”

Say it isn’t so, George! Aren’t there any age-appropriate romantic films you could do? His last rom-co* Ticket To Paradise, starring opposite Julia Roberts as divorcées, co*es to mind. It’s also hard to imagine him co*peting with 25 year olds, because truthfully the younger generation could use a lesson from Clooney in being a charismatic and co*pelling romantic lead. And there is precedent for Clooney’s bowing out gracefully. Jimmy Stewart’s last romantic lead was at 50 (Bell, Book And Candle); Cary Grant’s at 60 (Father Goose). Jack Nicholson was 66 at the release of Something’s Gotta Give. But hey, with the right script…?

Clooney may be too busy being a political operative; he quite publicly advocated for President Joe Biden to step aside as the 2024 Democratic nominee and, well, the rest is history. In his 60 Minutes interview, Clooney discussed that move as well as the current political landscape. “We’re seeing this idea of using government to scare or fine or use corporations to make journalists smaller,” he said (via The Guardian). “Governments don’t like the freedom of the press. They never have. And that goes for whether you are a conservative or a liberal or whatever side you’re on. They don’t like the press.” This interview so incensed current president Donald Trump he took to his social media to condemn everyone involved, calling Clooney “a second-rate movie ‘star’ and failed political pundit.”
