Emmy Rossum to take on Black Widow (not that one) for Hulu
[html]i>New Girl creator Liz Meriwether will write the new series.

“Emmy Rossum in Black Widow” sounds like a Disney-approved headline from 2019 (or maybe even 2012), but here we are in 2025. Except it’s not “Black Widow” like the Avenger, it’s “black widow” like the term used to mean before Marvel fully invaded popular consciousness. Rossum’s project—a drama series that was just picked up by Hulu—remains untitled for now, probably to avoid confusion with the superhero industrial co*plex. But it is loosely inspired by the 1987 film Black Widow, which came well before the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Rossum isn’t actually playing the show’s black widow; she’s currently in negotiations to star as the FBI agent who “uses the secrets from a female serial killer’s past to try and find her,” per Deadline. (In the film, Debra Winger played a Department of Justice agent who beco*es obsessed with hunting down Theresa Russell’s character, a woman who kills her wealthy husbands for their money.) Rossum most recently appeared on the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room in 2023 and Peacock’s Angelyne in 2022, after spending years as the beleaguered big sister of the Gallagher family on Shameless.
The untitled Black Widow series will be written by showrunner Liz Meriwether. Meriwether is perhaps best known as the showrunner on beloved sitco* New Girl, but in recent years she’s branched into a more dramatic space with the Emmy-nominated series Dropout and the upco*ing four-part dramedy Dying For se*. Meriwether and Rossum will both serve as executive producers on the series.
