Here’s a nice thought: what if the James Bond franchise, which Amazon reportedly just paid in the neighborhood of $1 billion for control of, was handled with care? This is what former 007 Pierce Brosnan is hoping for, as he expresses in a new interview with The Telegraph. And one way they can respect that character is to not make him American.

“I thought it was co*ing for some time I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael,” Brosnan tells The Telegraph. “It takes great courage for them to let go. They will still have a say in matters. I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.”

However, one thing that would be too much imagination would be to cast an American as the famed fictional British spy. There apparently has been behind-the-scenes speculation that Amazon could Americanize the character, but so far nothing concrete about casting has happened. Regardless, Brosnan thinks it’s a “given” that the spy should be British. (Brosnan, for the record, is Irish, and one of only two non-British Bonds.)

“In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, [the takeover] does co*e with a certain lament,” Brosnan tells the paper. Though it’s unclear whether Brosnan knew about reports that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ousted Barbara Broccoli from the franchise that her father founded to the tune of $1 billion, the actor joins another former Bond in expressing some disappointment. Last month, Timothy Dalton told the same paper that he found the takeover “kind of sad.” Dalton also affirmed his position that the character must be British, telling the outlet, “It is one of the few wonderful stories we’ve got in film that is British. The leading character is British. We can call it our own.”
