Adam Driver sets first series since days as Lena Dunham's TV boyfriend

Adam Driver, now widely regarded as one of the best actors of his generation, was first introduced to the world as Hannah’s (Lena Dunham) problematic boyfriend Adam on Girls. Since then, he’s gone A-list, nabbing multiple Academy Award nominations and working with the most prestigious directors (Spike Lee, Ridley Scott, Noah Baumbach, Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Steven Soderbergh, Francis Ford Coppola, etc.), not to mention the Star Wars of it all. But now, having more or less conquered cinema, the actor is returning to his first home with a new Apple TV+ series co-starring Jessica Chastain.

According to Deadline, Apple has given a straight-to-series order for The Dealer, “a biting exploration of power, class, seduction and culture set inside the glittering world of the high-end art market, told through the eyes of an aspiring super gallerist, played by Jessica Chastain, and the tangled relationship with her most gifted and unnerving artist, played by Adam Driver.” The drama is written by playwright Lucas Hnath and will be directed by Sam Gold. The pair previously collaborated on the Tony-nominated Broadway play A Doll’s House, Part 2. The pair will also reunite on the series with dramaturg Sarah Lunnie, who will executive produce The Dealer alongside Hnath and Gold.

Chastain never had as much of an established TV career as Driver did—you may remember her from one-off appearances in series like Veronica Mars or ER, but her big break came from the movies. However, she’s explored prestige television since beco*ing a movie star (and an Oscar winner). Like some of her other female peers in Hollywood, she’s taken on the additional role of producer to steward some meaty small-screen roles for herself, like 2021’s Scenes From A Marriage and 2022’s George & Tammy. Chastain will executive produce The Dealer (alongside Driver), as well as her other upco*ing Apple TV+ series The Savant.
