Day 3-8 Fire Weather Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0358 PM CST Wed Nov 27 2024

Valid 291200Z - 051200Z

The mid-level flow pattern over much of the US will gradually
amplify as troughing is established over the East. The broad cyclone
will support strong northwesterly flow into the central/eastern US
as ridging develops over the West Coast. The amplifying
northwesterly flow will support multiple cold air intrusions over
the eastern 2/3rds of the CONUS as a strong cold front moves through
D2/Thursday and is reinforced by a second front early next week.
Following the fronts, strong surface high pressure is expected with
an Arctic air mass. The co*bination of cold temperatures, weak winds
and precipitation appears unlikely to support much fire-weather
threat over the central/eastern CONUS. Though fire-weather concerns
could increase over southern CA later in the forecast period.

...South California...
As the upper trough over the east deepens, mid-level ridging will
move inland and stall over the Pacific Northwest. The strong high
pressure over the Great Basin will support a prolonged period of
weak to occasionally moderate offshore flow over southern CA as
surface pressure gradients intensify. This will support a warming
and drying trend through this weekend and into next week as fuels
recover from a recent rain event.

Later next week, Pacific troughing could redevelop beneath the ridge
off the CA Coast, potentially bolstering offshore gradients.
Continued warmings and drying with the potential for offshore winds
could support a greater fire-weather risk midweek next week in to
week 2. However, forecast confidence is low as model guidance varies
considerably on the placement and strength of offshore flow.
