Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1157 AM CDT Fri May 13 2022
Valid 131700Z - 141200Z
12Z soundings across Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska sampled a belt
of fast midlevel westerly flow overspreading the region. Clear skies
and downslope warming/drying along the Colorado Rockies and parts of
the central High Plains are supporting 10-20 percent RH per the
latest surface observations. Over the Colorado Rockies, sustained
westerly surface winds of 15-20 mph (with higher gusts) coupled with
the low RH and near-record dry fuels will support elevated to spotty
critical conditions today. Across parts of southeastern Wyoming into
western Nebraska, stronger sustained westerly surface winds of 25-30
mph (with higher gusts) will support elevated to critical
meteorological conditions, though recent rainfall and greenup of
fuels may mitigate the fire-weather threat to an extent --
precluding Critical highlights.
Across parts of the Northeast (particularly over northern Maine),
locally elevated conditions are possible this afternoon -- where
above-average temperatures will support minimum RH near 25-30
percent amid drying fuels. However, sustained west-southwesterly
surface winds of 10 mph or less should generally temper the
fire-weather risk.

...Synopsis...
A mid-level shortwave trough, currently near the Nevada/Utah border,
will shift east this morning and take on a negative tilt as it moves
through the northern Plains. At the surface, a strong surface low
will continue to deepen as it moves into North Dakota and eventually
into the southern Canadian Prairie. Some deep mixing is expected
across Nebraska and southern South Dakota which could result in some
dry and breezy conditions. However, fuels are quite moist across
this region, and therefore, the fire weather threat should remain
limited.
Dry conditions will remain across the Southwestern states where
fuels are near record dryness in some locations. However, winds will
be light, precluding the fire weather threat.
