Mesoscale Discussion 0665
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0553 PM CDT Thu May 05 2022

Areas affected...South-Central/Southeast TX...Western LA

Concerning...Tornado Watch 181...

Valid 052253Z - 060030Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 181 continues.

SUMMARY...Severe threat will continue to shift gradually east and
south of ww181. At this time a new watch is not anticipated.

DISCUSSION...Upper trough continues its eastward progression across
the central/southern Plains early this evening. Substantial flow
extends through the base of this feature across low latitudes which
supports the idea that organized convection will spread east of
ww181 and potentially sag a bit south over the next few hours. While
a mature squall line is noted across northwestern LA into southeast
TX, much of this convection is sub-severe with gusty winds less than
50kt. Trailing convection across southern portions of the watch is
less linear in nature and appears to be producing marginally severe
hail at times, likely a product of steeper lapse rates and higher
buoyancy. While isolated hail/wind may continue with this activity
for the next few hours, overall trends do not favor extending the
watch downstream.
