Jacob joins Mrs. Howard's class in exclusive Abbott Elementary clip

You’re never too old to go back to school. Of course, when adults go back to school it’s usually with other adults, not elementary school kids. But if you were in Jacob’s (Chris Perfetti) shoes, wouldn’t you also want a front row seat for musical education from the one and only Mrs. Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph)? That’s what happens in this Abbott Elementary exclusive clip (below), shared with The A.V. Club ahead of the new episode “Music Class.”

According to the logline for the new episode, which airs on Wednesday, “Barbara and Gregory are in over their heads when they find themselves in new roles at Abbott Elementary.” Spoiler alert if you’re not caught up on the fourth season: the previous episode, “Audit,” saw a major shakeup at the school when Ava (Janelle James) took full responsibility for accepting expensive bribes from the nearby golf course. Unfortunately, her selfless act got her fired as principal of Abbott. And judging by the logline, it seems Gregory (Tyler James Williams) may be stepping up as principal, a role that he was chasing when he first started working at the school. And though the gang was heartbroken to see Ava go, Gregory could really use the promotion, considering he recently took a second job as a rideshare driver for extra cash. Luckily for the show, if not for Gregory, all the hijinks have paid off in great ratings: “Karaoke,” the March 12 episode, earned Abbott‘s best Total Viewer audience (6.55 million) in two months and its best Adults 18-49 rating (2.56 rating) since the show’s mid-season debut.

Meanwhile, Ava’s sacrifice inspired Barbara to take over the school’s music class. Barb had been suffering from serious burnout, but Ava suggested that doing something she loved (music) might reinvigorate her passion for teaching. (Not to mention giving Barbara a second job was a lot cheaper than hiring a new music teacher.) However, as you can see in the Abbott Elementary exclusive clip, the kids are more interested in playing instruments and going viral than learning the basics. Will Barb be able to put the fun in fundamentals? We’ll find out in “Music Class,” which airs tonight on ABC at 8:30 PM E.T.
