0320 PM CDT Mon May 16 2022

Areas affected...Central/Eastern NC...Southeast VA

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 228...

Valid 162020Z - 162145Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 228
continues.

SUMMARY...Threat for strong to severe thunderstorms capable of
damaging wind gusts will continue through the afternoon.

DISCUSSION...Recent surface analysis places the cold from about 40
miles west of DCA southwestward through central VA and central NC
into far western SC. Despite some earlier storms, the air mass
preceding the front in NC remains moderately unstable, with
mesoanalysis estimating MLCAPE around 1000 J/kg. Temperatures have
continued to warm, with large portion of the region in the mid 80s.
These thermodynamic conditions support the potential for additional
thunderstorms along and ahead of the front. Strong updrafts are
possible within these storms, and the co*bination of water loading
and steep low-level lapse rates could result in several strong
downdrafts over the next few hours.
