Mesoscale Discussion 0702
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0615 PM CDT Mon May 09 2022

Areas affected...Northern MN

Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely

Valid 092315Z - 100045Z

Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent

SUMMARY...If convection can be sustained along the front this
evening, a brief tornado and/or strong wind gust will be possible.

DISCUSSION...c*nvection in gradually increasing across northern MN
along and ahead of a cold front. Some destabilization is ongoing
downstream of this development, though low-level moisture remains
relatively limited. Deep-layer shear is quite strong (effective
shear of 70+ kt per recent mesoanalyses) across the region, which
could aid in the development of an organized storm or two, but may
also tend to inhibit deep convection given the limited instability.
Any stronger storm that can be sustained will pose a threat of a
brief tornado and/or strong wind gusts, given the strong low-level
flow/shear resulting from a 50+ kt low-level jet. For now, it
appears that the threat will remain too isolated and marginal for
watch issuance.
