"Longest-running band in pop history," The Searchers announces its first retirement

[html]The Searchers announced farewell tour. They may be in their 80s, but we'll be damned if we're falling for another "farewell tour."

After 68 years, the so-called longest-running pop band, The Searchers, has announced its first retirement. Having been touring through various line-ups since 1957, when John McNally and Mike Pender founded the group, The Searchers have finally given into the pull of a “farewell tour” that has benefitted whippersnappers like The Who and Kiss for decades. This first “final show” will occur at the Glastonbury Festival on June 27 in England, marking the end of the group’s first farewell tour.

“A Glastonbury debut at 83, can anyone top that? I don’t think life gets any better, does it?” McNally told the BBC. “There will be a few nerves, but in a good way, and we’ll be nicely warmed up from our shows in June. We can’t wait to see our fans again for this incredible final farewell.”

McNally founded the group in 1957, predating The Rolling Stones, The Who, and The Beach Boys. The band mostly found success in cover versions of pop hits, topping the charts with versions of Jackie DeShannon’s “Needles And Pins” and The Drifters’ “Sweets For My Sweet.” The last time the band charted was in 1967, but the Searchers continued for another 50 years, swapping out members as necessary. Among the mainstays, Frank Allen has been taking the bass for a walk since 1964, while the most recent lead singer, Spence James, joined in the mid-’80s.

Look, we get it: 68 years is a long career, and if you can retire around 65 in a world where retirement isn’t getting any easier, good on you. With more than 50 million records sold, the band undoubtedly deserves its flowers. But this isn’t our first rodeo either. We look forward to The Searchers announcing reunion and farewell tours for many years to co*e. In related news, Kiss announced its first post-retirement show today. Your move, Searchers.
