A24 may be known for its esoteric catalog, but the slow rollout of information about upco*ing Josh Safdie feature Marty Supreme has been especially inscrutable. When the Timothée Chalamet-led project was first announced—via a picture of a ping-ping ball bearing the name of the film and the words “made in America”—trades assumed it would be a biopic about table tennis legend Marty Reisman. Then sources close to the film claimed it wasn’t a biopic, actually, but some sort of “fictionalized original,” despite the name, setting, and fact that Chalamet has been made up to look a lot like the real Reisman. “Eclectic” feels like an understatement for the announced cast, which, in addition to Chalamet, includes Fran Drescher, Tyler, The Creator, Shark Tank‘s Kevin O’Leary, magician Penn Jillette, Sandra Bernhard, and Gwyneth Paltrow in her first major acting role since 2019.

Until now, we haven’t known anything about the actual plot of the film beyond the fact that all of these personalities are somehow going to be involved in the high stakes world of professional ping-pong. Luckily, you can always count on Paltrow for some color, as she just gave to Vanity Fair in a new profile. Her tease? She and Timothée Chalamet have “a lot of se* in this movie… There’s a lot—a lot.” That admission was partially inspired by a leaked set photo of the pair passionately kissing, but Paltrow’s description of the younger actor as “a thinking man’s se* symbol” was all her.

As Paltrow has been out of the game for a while, she apparently “did not know” intimacy coordinators existed, a protection she and Chalamet largely chose to waive, she said. “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back,'” Paltrow recalled, explaining that the idea of someone saying “Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here” would make her feel “as an artist, very stifled.” Actors and filmmakers continue to navigate the relatively new position as it grows, with a similar refusal by Mikey Madison stirring up some controversy for eventual Best Picture winner Anora in the lead-up to the Oscars.

Paltrow also shared some details about the actual plot of the film, in addition to all that se*. Her character “is married to someone who is in the Ping-Pong mafia, as it were,” before having an affair with Chalamet’s Marty. (What is it about racket/paddle sports that inspires so much cheating?) “They meet and she’s had a pretty tough life, and I think he breathes life back into her, but it’s kind of transactional for them both,” she continued.

Marty Supreme is currently slated to premiere Christmas Day this year. Sounds like fun for the whole family!
