...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR SNAKE RIVER PLAIN...

No changes to the ongoing forecast.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 0155 AM CDT Thu Jul 21 2022/

...Synopsis...
In the mid levels, a set of shortwave troughs moving onshore across
the West Coast will flatten the large ridge across the Four Corners
and Southwest. Increasing westerly flow associated with the
shortwaves will overspread the Great Basin and central Rockies
bolstering low-level winds. Elevated and critical fire weather
conditions appear likely across eastern ID and the central Rockies.
Elsewhere, very warm and dry conditions will persist beneath the
ridge, though winds are forecast to remain light.

...Eastern Idaho into the Great Basin and the central Rockies...
Mid-level flow will quickly increase over the eastern Great Basin
and ID early Friday morning, as the first of the mid-level troughs
approaches. Timed favorably with the diurnal cycle, deep mixing
should help transport momentum from 40-50 kt southwesterly flow
aloft to the surface, enhancing low-level winds. Also aided by the
terrain, sustained 20-25 mph surface winds appear likely across the
Snake River Valley into central and eastern ID. The dry downslope
winds and warm temperatures will also support low afternoon RH
values of 10-15%. With fuels critically dry, widespread elevated to
critical fire weather conditions are likely.

Farther west in the lee of the Sierra, less confidence exists the
strength of low-level winds. While low RH and a few hours of locally
gusty 15-20 mph winds are possible, the stronger mid-level flow is
forecast to the north and east. Fire weather concerns appears more
local despite very dry area fuels.
