Day 2 Fire Weather Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0200 AM CDT Tue Jul 19 2022

Valid 201200Z - 211200Z

...NO CRITICAL AREAS...

...Synopsis...
In the mid levels, the quasi-permanent ridge over the Southwest is
forecast to strengthen Wednesday, as a shortwave trough over the
northern Plains shifts eastward into the Great Lakes. At the
surface, a weak cold front will move south before stalling over the
southern Plains. With the ridge strengthening, mid-level flow is
forecast to weaken over much of the western US. The lack of stronger
flow aloft should limit overall fire danger, though terrain enhanced
gusty winds will remain possible across the northern Great Basin and
central Rockies. Extreme heat is also expected beneath the upper
ridge, exacerbating critical drought across the southern Plains.

...Southern Plains...
South of the weak cold front, low-level southerly flow may
occasionally reach 15 mph across portions of OK and TX Wednesday
afternoon. Extreme heat (100F+ surface temps) along with RH below
20% will further dry already drought-stressed fuels. While typical
wind-driven fire conditions are not expected, near record dry fuels
in co*bination with the unusually warm/dry conditions will likely
support a few hours of locally elevated fire weather concerns.

Isolated high-based thunderstorms will also be possible along the
stalled front mainly across central OK and north TX Wednesday
afternoon. While storms are not forecast to be dry given PWAT values
of 1.2-1.4 inches, the warm temperatures and deep mixing heights may
support a few drier lightning strikes away from the main
precipitation cores. With area fuels critically dry, a few lightning
ignitions will be possible.
