Mesoscale Discussion 1278
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

Areas affected...Western South Dakota

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 408...

Valid 242020Z - 242115Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 408
continues.

SUMMARY...Large hail and damaging winds are possible with storms
moving out of northeast Wyoming and the Black Hills.

DISCUSSION...The leading edge of mid-level ascent is evident on
visible satellite imagery with deepening cumulus/thunderstorms in
northeast Wyoming. Cumulus development is also increasing downstream
within the Black Hills. As this ascent overspreads the area,
activity in theses areas is expected to increase in intensity as it
encounters marginally greater low-level, post-frontal moisture in
western South Dakota. While buoyancy will be limited, 35-50 kts of
effective shear and a straight hodograph will favor splitting
supercells capable of large hail and damaging winds.
