As we’ve seen from previous promos, the Doctor’s (Ncuti Gatwa) new co*panion Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) isn’t like the others. She’s not all that interested in traveling with the Doctor (okay, she’ll make an exception for the 803rd Interstellar Song Contest), she’s just trying to get back home. Unfortunately, a glitchy TARDIS has other ideas. In the new Doctor Who season two trailer, Belinda laments, “Can’t you get this box of yours fixed?” Presumably not before a few hair-raising adventures, beginning with the premiere on April 12.
Per the synopsis for the second season, “The Doctor meets Belinda Chandra and begins an epic quest to get her back to Earth. But a mysterious force is stopping their return and the time-traveling TARDIS team must face great dangers, bigger enemies and wilder terrors than ever before.” This season promises to pull on some plot threads from the previous one, like revealing the identity of the mysterious Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson). And given the recurring faces the Doctor saw around the universe last year, there may be a connection between Belinda and Mundy Flynn, the character the actor played in the previous season’s “Boom.” As the Doctor mysteriously says in the trailer, “Everything is out of sync… our entire reality is in danger.”
The beloved U.K. sci-fi series is still flashing that Disney+ budget around with a Phil Collins soundtrack for the Doctor Who season two trailer. (That’s two seasons on Disney, 15 seasons of “New Who” altogether, and 41 total seasons televised since 1963.) Though the Disney era hasn’t necessarily seen Who‘s best ratings, it’s allowed the team to flex some creative muscles. For instance, the upco*ing season will see the Doctor go animated (billed as “a first” for the series). There’s also a period piece episode set in 2007 that will make longtime viewers of the show feel as ancient as the Doctor is.
